MUSIC

It was one of my New Years Resolutions to become more aware of music, old and new. I have always loved music and try to surround myself and my family with it as much as possible. And find it odd when people don't...weirdos

I love any type of music really. There is a time and place for all of it. I even loved heavy metal in high school, for a short while, but I did. Our family listened to Christain music when I was really little and I enjoyed singing to it as loud as I could in the car. In grade 5 I discovered No Doubt, which was my first cassette tape, and The Spice Girls and that was when I started to like my own music.

I've loved electronic music and top 40 for most of my life, like Calvin Harris and Lady Gaga.  I liked country like Tim McGraw, Shania Twain and Alan Jackson when I was 7 because my mom would play them loud (I remember we had just gotten a CD player), I liked the Police and U2 when I was around 9, I loved listening to classical music on the radio when I was 14, I remember getting a radio alarm clock in my room at that age and always listening to it and taping songs that I thought were cool, like the Cartigans and Sheryl Crow.

I liked emo music in grade 10 and darker bands like Tool and At the Drive-In in Grade 11. I liked rap like Eminem and D12 when I was in grade 12 and I think it was around then when I was introduced to electronic music. My friends loved spinning records and I got caught up in that scene and loved it. Groups like the Gorillas, Stanton Warriors, M.I.A., Benny Benassi, MGMT and LCD Soundsystem were always on my burnt Cd's and I would love to just drive and drive to listen to them.

Music has always been a big part of my life. My parents had Much Music on often and I remember dancing to music. I remember having my girl friends over and just dancing and dancing. Why not! We were young and full of energy. We felt the music and had a great time dancing to ABBA, Ace of Base and the Cranberries. (Steph Holland!)

The music that we fill this house with now is music that is great for kids and adults, like The Beatles, Earth Wind and Fire, Elton John, Michael Jackson, The Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Fleetwood Mac, KC and the Sunshine Band, Kool and the Gang, The Bee Gees, and a lot of disco. Crocodile Rock and Rocket Man by Elton John are great songs and find I am requesting those songs the most, while I cook. I am really enjoying his greatest hits album right now.

I love cooking and just loosing myself in the music, just listening to the words and picturing the story that they are singing about. I guess most people really like music when they feel like they can relate to the singer.

For some reason I just love this song:

Rocket Man  by Elton John (click on the title to listen)

She packed my bags last night, preflight
Zero hour, nine a.m.
And I'm gonna be high
As a kite by then

I miss the earth so much
I miss my wife
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight

And I think it's gonna be a long, long, time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Ah, no no no
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man
Burnin' out his fuse
Up here alone

Mars ain't the kind of place
To raise your kids
In fact, it's cold as hell
And there's no one there to raise them
If you did

And all this science
I don't understand
It's just my job
Five days a week
A rocket man
Rocket Man

And I think it's gonna be a long, long, time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Ah, no no no

And I think it's gonna be a long, long, time
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
I'm not the man they think I am at home
Ah, no no no...
I'm a rocket man
Rocket man
Burnin' out his fuse
Up here alone

Maybe it's because Elton is singing about missing his wife, about kids, and about having a job 5 days a week that I feel like I can understand and picture his life. He thinks he is someone different outside of his home life and many people do think that way. I just really enjoy the lyrics and the music.

My favourite ALBUM would have to be The Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack because Tod and I used to dance to it all the time, we got engaged to it (Tod literally purposed to me while we were listening to it) and we played it at our wedding and our first dance song was to How Deep is Your Love by the Bee Gees, which is on the album. It's our album and we love to dance to it now with Kyri and the kids.

How Deep is your Love by The Bee Gees (click on the title to listen)

I know your eyes in the morning sun
I feel you touch me in the pouring rain
And the moment that you wander far from me
I wanna feel you in my arms again

And you come to me on a summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love and then softly leave
And it's me you need to show
How Deep Is Your Love

How deep is your love, How deep is your love
I really need to learn
'Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You're the light in my deepest darkest hour
You're my saviour when I fall
And you may not think
I care for you
When you know down inside
That I really do
And it's me you need to show
How Deep Is Your Love

How deep is your love, How deep is your love
I really need to learn
'Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

And you come to me on a summer breeze
Keep me warm in your love and then softly leave
And it's me you need to show
How Deep Is Your Love

How deep is your love, How deep is your love
I really need to learn
'Cause we're living in a world of fools
Breaking us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me

I just always cry whenever I hear it. It's so beautiful and romantic. It's my heart and my soul, because it will always remind me of the man I love most in this world. Tod! It reminds me how he is the most romantic, loving, kind hearted, passionate and faithful man I could ever ask for and I am so lucky to say he is mine.

If anyone has any music that they feel like I should hear please send me a comment. I would love to hear your favourites music that really speaks to you.
